NCSJ’s Weiss named to chair Heritage Commission

WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Obama named Lesley Weiss, director of community services for NCSJ: Advocates on behalf of Jews in Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States and Eurasia, to chair the Heritage Abroad Commission.

Weiss, who was named to the commission in 2011, succeeds Warren Miller, who was named chair in 2001. The announcement was made on Jan. 25.

The commission seeks to preserve properties overseas associated with Americans.

Many of the commission’s members come from the Jewish organizational world because much of the commission’s work is in preserving Jewish sites, particularly cemeteries, which were left unattended in the wake of the Holocaust.

Weiss keeps her NCSJ job, where she is key liaison between the U.S. Jewish community and those in the former Soviet Union.
