Naples police seize arms bound for Egypt on Israeli tip
Published December 9, 2012
ROME (JTA) – Police and customs officials in the port of Naples have seized five containers believed to contain arms about to be shipped to Egypt.
An Egyptian man was arrested in connection with the case. Italian media said Israeli authorities may have tipped off the Italians to the case.
Israel has previously foiled arms shipments meant for Hamas in Gaza.
News reports said that during the operation on the night of Dec. 7 and early on Dec. 8, police opened one of the five containers and found rocket-launching pistols.
As of Sunday, the containers were being held in a secured section of the port while an investigation was under way.
