Man who raped Holocaust survivor sentenced to jail

SYDNEY, Australia (JTA) – An Australian man who sexually assaulted an elderly Holocaust survivor in 1991 was sentenced to up to five years in prison.

Robert Webb, 39, was arrested and charged in 2011 and, since he was sentenced to a minimum of three years in jail, could be released within a year given time already served, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The victim, a Holocaust survivor who was 71 at the time of the attack, has since died.

She was attacked in a parking lot in Sydney by Webb, who was 18 at the time, and ordered into the back seat of her car where he sexually assaulted her.

Police reopened the cold case in 2011 after identifying Webb as a suspect through DNA testing of a semen stain they found on the ground in the car park.

“The victim’s ordeal must have been terrifying,” said Judge Ian McClintock. “And the conduct of the offender was calculated to humiliate her.”
