Lag B’Omer attendance in Djerba low

(JTA) — Attendance at Lag B’Omer in the ancient community of Djerba in Tunisia was low for the second year in a row.

Reuters reported that some 500 Jews attended celebrations on the island this week, up from just a hundred last year, but below the thousands that usually attend.

The report cited security concerns in the wake of the upheaval that last year replaced a longstanding dictatorship with pro-democracy forces, as well as threats from  Islamist extremist groups.

The holiday usually attracts thousands of former Tunisian Jews now living in Israel and Europe.
