(JTA) — “Footnote,” Israel’s Oscar entry for best foreign-language film, was nominated for an Academy Award.

The nominations were released Tuesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

“Footnote,” directed and written by Joseph Cedar, centers on the rivalry between a father and son, both famous Talmudic scholars in Jerusalem.

Poland’s submission, “In Darkness,” by Agnieszka Holland (“Europa, Europa”), which follows the fate of a dozen Jewish men, women and children who hid for 14 months in the underground sewers of Lvov during the Nazi occupation of Poland, was also nominated, as was Iran’s “A Separation,” which won the Golden Globe earlier this month.

Woody Allen was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for “Midnight in Paris,” which was also nominated for Best Picture. Aaron Sorkin was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Moneyball.” Steven Spielberg’s epic World War I movie “War Horse” was nominated for Best Picture.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, Jonah Hill was nominated for his performance in “Moneyball.”

Oscar winners will be crowned Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
