(JTA) — An Israeli boy came in first and an Israeli girl came in second in the International Bible Quiz.

Ezriel Shilat, a resident of Hatzor Haglilit in Israel’s north and a student of the yeshiva at Shomria in Israel’s south, won first prize in the quiz’s final round on Thursday.

Shilat was among the settlers removed in 2005 from the Gaza Strip when Israel withdrew.

Coming in second was Oriah Cohen, a student at the B’nei Akivah girl’s high school in Kiryat Motzkin, a suburb of Haifa, and a resident of Haifa.

This year’s quiz drew controversy when a Jewish teen from Ethiopia was ordered to deposit thousands of dollars in order to participate in the final stages of the quiz. He was ultimately granted residency status this week.
