JERUSALEM (JTA) — Samer Issawi, a Palestinian hunger striker who was released early from an Israeli prison, was rearrested during Israel’s search for three kidnapped teenagers.

Issawi was arrested on Monday at his home in eastern Jerusalem and his remand was extended until Sunday, according to the Maan Palestinian news service.

In 2011, Issawi was among the more than 1,000 prisoners released in the swap for kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, but he was rearrested more than a year later and shortly after started his eight-month hunger strike. Issawi in 2002 was sentenced to 26 years in prison for terrorist activities.

At least 55 other Palestinians who were freed in the Shalit exchange have been rearrested in the 12 days since the three teens were abducted.
