Israel holds national earthquake drill

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel’s Home Front Command held a national earthquake drill.
Sunday’s exercise, the first of its kind in Israel, simulated tremors ranging from 5.0 to 7.0 in magnitude, as well as aftershocks. It is part of the country’s annual emergency drill, titled “Turning Point 6.” The drill also tested the Home Front Command’s new text message alert system.
The public was notified of a “national disaster situation” on radio and television stations at 11 a.m. on Sunday; a similar warning will occur at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
The notice called on the public to run to an open area or to go to a safe room, leaving the door open, or to a protected area.
The Home Front Command will hold several mass-casualty event drills throughout the country over the next week.
