JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli military officer was injured in a Palestinian stabbing attack near Mount Ebal next to Nablus in the West Bank.

The assailant, identified by the Palestinian Maan news agency as Haitham Mahmoud Abd al-Jalil, 31, of a nearby Palestinian village, was shot and killed in response to the stabbing on Thursday afternoon.

The assailant first attacked a military vehicle patrolling the area. When IDF troops got out of the vehicle to inspect the damage, he took out a knife and stabbed the officer, who was injured in his hand, according to the IDF.

It was the second Palestinian assailant killed on Thursday.

On Thursday morning, a Palestinian man armed with a knife attempted to stab a soldier at a checkpoint at the Beut Anun junction north of Hebron. The assailant was shot and killed by other IDF troops at the scene who attempted to thwart the attack, the IDF spokesman said.

A Palestinian man was shot and killed at the same junction on Tuesday as he attempted to stab a soldier manning the checkpoint.
