Haaretz publishes Arabic language editorial urging Arabs to vote
Published January 16, 2013
(JTA) — The Israeli newspaper Haaretz published an Arabic-language editorial titled “Arabs of Israel: Get out and vote.”
“As a national minority, [Arab citizens] both enrich and challenge Israeli democracy, and therefore, it’s appropriate for them to have political representation that reflects their proportion in the Israeli population,” the left-leaning publication wrote.
The editorial also was published with a Hebrew translation. The Arabic version also appeared on Haaretz’s English and Hebrew websites.
In 1977, Haaretz also published an Arabic editorial heralding the arrival of then-Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, the first Arab head of state to visit Israel.
