Gunmen holding hostages, possibly children, in northern France

(JTA) — Armed men have taken hostages, possibly including children, in northern France near the border with Belgium.

Police said gunmen fired shots near a school before taking hostages in the town of Roubaix, The Associated Press reported Tuesday afternoon.

Unconfirmed reports are circulating that children are among the hostages. There are also reports that a banker and his family have been targeted. It is not clear whether the attackers are connected to the perpetrators of the Paris attacks of Nov. 13 that killed at least 130.

The neighborhood where the situation is occurring has been cordoned off, according to Reuters.

Belgian police are continuing to hunt for two suspects in the Nov. 13 attacks. Belgium has been the site of numerous raids in search of terrorists.
