(JTA) — A two-alarm fire destroyed a Black Hebrew temple on the South Side of Chicago.

The fire, identified as an extra-alarm fire requiring extra equipment, started Monday night in the House of Israel Temple of Faith and spread to apartments located on the second story of the building, the Chicago Tribune reported.

A senior citizen and a wheelchair-bound woman with multiple sclerosis were rescued from the apartments by firefighters.

Firefighters believe that the building is a total loss.

The original congregation was founded in 1965.
