EU designates Hezbollah’s military wing as terrorist organization

(JTA) — The Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union designated the military wing of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

Monday’s unanimous decision does not extend to the political wing of Hezbollah, which is also a Lebanese political party. The United States and Israel consider Hezbollah a terrorist organization, without differentiating between the group’s military and political wings.

“We welcome this decision today and hope that this will greatly dampen Hezbollah’s efforts to raise funds to finance its terrorist activities, recruit, plot and commit atrocities on European soil and beyond,” European Jewish Congress President Moshe Kantor said in a statement.

The Lebanese government, according to the AP, has requested that the EU not designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. A push for the designation intensified this year after Hezbollah was blamed for a 2012 terror attack in Bulgaria that killed six people.
