Day school catcher drafted in MLB to play college ball

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Max Ungar, the 17-year-old catcher drafted by the Washington Nationals in the Major League Baseball draft, will play college baseball instead.

Ungar, who recently graduated from Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Maryland, decided to fulfill his commitment to play baseball at Denison University in Ohio, according to the Washington Jewish Week.

“The National’s will offer me a contract, and I will decline the offer. I was recruited by Denison and plan to go there to study and play baseball. I really like the academic challenges of the school and know that if I play well the Nationals or another team can draft me again after my junior year of college,” Ungar told the Washington Jewish Week.
