Chabad centers in flooded Colorado area host Yom Kippur services

(JTA) — The synagogue of the Chabad on Campus center in Boulder held Yom Kippur services in the lobby of the building, which is above the flood line.

About 300 people attended the services, Chabad.org reported on Sunday, Rabbi Yisroel Wilhem, co-director of Chabad of the University of Colorado, said that many were not able to leave their homes to come to services, but others came because of the tragedy of the flash-flooding that continues to batter the Boulder, Colo. area.

Rabbi Yaakov Borenstein, co-director of the Chabad Jewish Center in Longmont, Colo., was forced to evacuate his home late Thursday night, booking the last room at the hotel in which he had booked a room to host the Chabad Jewish Center’s Yom Kippur services. He also paid for rooms in another hotel for other families who lost their homes, according to Chabad.org.

Rain continued to fall Sunday in Colorado, with the death toll as high as six, and nearly 500 people unaccounted for, according to reports.
