(JTA) — Religious slurs were scratched into five cars in a parking lot at the University of California, Davis.

Police have launched a hate crimes investigation into the vandalism, which occurred early Saturday morning, the Los Angeles Times reported two days later. The local media did not specify what the religious slurs said. Also, the tires of eight other cars were slashed.

Students were informed of the incident by email.

The university’s chancellor, Linda P.B. Katehi, condemned the acts in a statement.

“I am deeply troubled and disappointed that the campus community has experienced another incident that included damaged property and, even more grievously, offensive and disparaging slurs,” she said. “We condemn all hate crimes and will see that the responsible party or parties, once identified, are held accountable.”

In January, two swastikas were spray-painted on the Jewish Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house, two days after the student senate passed a divestment resolution targeting Israel.
