JERUSALEM—An axe-wielding Palestinian man was shot in the foot by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near Jerusalem.
The man, 29, reportedly pulled an axe out of a bag as he approached the Qalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem on Sunday. After calling out several warnings for the man to stop, Israeli soldiers first fired warning shots in the air and then fired at his legs.

The bag reportedly contained maps, papers with nationalist slogans and a knife. Police told Israeli media that it is believed he was set to carry out a terrorist attack.
The Palestinian was treated at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem for his injury.
The incident occurred a day after a Palestinian man stabbed a Boarder Guard officer in the neck with a screw driver near the Shufat Refugee Camp north of Jerusalem. The stabber has not been found.
