Attorney: Sheldon Adelson does not own Israel Hayom daily newspaper

JERUSALEM (JTA) — An attorney for Sheldon Adelson told Israel’s Supreme Court that the billionaire casino magnate does not own the daily newspaper Israel Hayom.

During a hearing Monday in the Supreme Court, attorney Avigdor Klagsbald said that the newspaper is owned by an Adelson relative, the first time that this has been disclosed. Adelson has frequently been cited in media reports as the newspaper’s owner, including by JTA.

The right-wing newspaper is widely considered to be a mouth piece for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

An article in December in the Las Vegas Review Journal, which was purchased late last year by a media group owned by Adelson and his children, noted that the newspaper is run by Sivan Ochshorn Dumont, a daughter of Adelson’s wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, from a prior marriage. It identifies Sheldon Adelson as the owner, however.

The question of Adelson’s ownership of Israel Hayom came up during the High Court hearing on Monday, against a Jerusalem District Court ruling on a Freedom of Information petition.

Klagsbald said the ruling should be vacated because it may be based on incorrect facts – including the misconception that Adelson owns Israel Hayom, Haaretz reported.
