JERUSALEM — An art prize that will guarantee an Israeli artist living in Israel or abroad a cash prize and a solo exhibition in Jerusalem was established at the Bezalel Academy.
Entries for the Ilana Elovic Bezalel Prize for the Arts are due by Feb. 9. The winner will receive an award of $20,000 as well as a catalog and solo exhibition at the Bezalel Gallery in Jerusalem.
The prize was established in memory of Elovic, a self-taught Israeli-American artist who died in 2006 of ovarian cancer after producing a body of work that centered on her disease. The competition is open to Israeli artists in Israel and the Diaspora.
Elovic, the daughter of Holocaust survivors, served as a cartographer in the intelligence corps of the Israel Defense Forces. Following her army service, she worked as a draftsman in one of Israel’s leading architectural firms. Elovic designed jewelry and later turned to sculpture, ceramics and painting.
Since the prize’s announcement in December, there have been more than 600 hits on the Ilana Elovic Bezalel Prize for the Arts page, with hundreds of hits on Elovic’s artwork.
