Arab from eastern Jerusalem allegedly spied for Hezbollah

JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Arab from eastern Jerusalem was charged with spying on Israeli sites for Hezbollah.

Azam Mashahra, of the eastern Jerusalem village of Jabel Mukaber, was charged Sunday in Jerusalem District Court of making contact with a foreign agent, passing information to the enemy, conspiracy to deliver information to the enemy, and traveling to an enemy country without permission, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Mashahra reportedly was recruited by Hezbollah last June and he admitted during interrogation after his arrest to passing information to the terrorist organization based in Lebanon.

Mashahra reportedly recently visited Lebanon where he was briefed by his handlers and told to return to Israel and to remain in contact. He communicated with his handlers using e-mail and Facebook.

He reportedly passed on information about sensitive Israeli sites, such as the Knesset, the government complex, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center, Har Hatzofim Medical Center, and the residences of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
