Anti-Semitic slurs hurled at group visiting Budapest Jewish quarter

(JTA) — Several apparently inebriated men hurled anti-Semitic insults at visitors to the historic Jewish quarter of Budapest they believed to Jewish, according to a Hungarian watchdog group.

In the incident early Tuesday in the center of the Hungarian capital, six individuals shouted “dirty Jews” at the visitors and accused them of “killing Jesus” at the group, Forum against anti-Semitism-Hungary reported.

While the dissemination of anti-Semitic ideas has proliferated in Hungary in recent years, confrontations of the kind described by the watchdog remain rare in the Central European country, which has approximately 100,000 Jews.

In 2014, the Jewish community’s main Action and Protection Foundation, or TEV, documented a total of 37 such incidents.
