JERUSALEM (JTA) — Two Palestinian children, 12, were arrested in Jerusalem after they were allegedly discovered to be planning an attack on Jews.

The children were arrested Thursday in the Old City, near the Temple Mount, after being found with three knives, according to Israel Police. One was carrying a goodbye letter written to his parents informing them of the plans to carry out an attack, the police said.

Both of the suspected attackers are from the West Bank, according to Ynet.

Also Thursday, a Palestinian man wielding an ax attacked Israeli soldiers north of Hebron, the Israeli army said. The troops, who were not injured, shot the attacker, according to the IDF.

The assailant, identified by Palestinian medics as Ibrahim Baradiya, 50, was killed at the scene, the Palestinian Maan news agency reported.

Baradiya is the first Palestinian attacker to be killed since the March 24 shooting of Abdel Fattah al-Sharif after he had stabbed an Israeli soldier. Al-Sharif was supine and unarmed when he was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier.

The soldier, whose detention was extended on Thursday by five days, reportedly will be charged with manslaughter in the incident, Israeli news outlets said.
