Students in the spotlight: Singing sensation

BY STEPHEN YOFFIE Sophomore, Parkway Central High School

For as long as she can remember, Parkway Central High School junior Greta Rosenstock has been singing along to her favorite tunes. Starting with the traditional “ABCs,” Greta has since made it all the way to center stage.

“I’ve been interested in music and singing ever since I was a little kid,” Greta said. “My entire family has always had a love for music.”

Music is so much a part of Greta’s life, it seemed fitting that it became an important aspect of her Judaism. A congregant of United Hebrew Congregation, Greta’s music has allowed her to find a deeper meaning in the Jewish tradition by connecting with others who find heart in the religion.

“I participate a lot at my synagogue for the holiday services,” Greta said. “Just this last year, I sang in the Purim show, the U.H. shows, and at the Rosh Hashanah multigenerational service.”

Just before she entered high school, Greta was cast in her favorite role so far and intensified her love for musical theater. “My favorite role easily was Winifred in ‘Once Upon a Mattress,’ but honestly it just made me love music and singing even more,” she said.

The unwavering passion that Greta holds for her singing is apparent in her vast accomplishments, including being part of the All-State Choir. The All-State Choir selects the top junior and senior high school singers in Missouri who audition for only four spots per section.

“It is a real honor to make the All-State Choir, especially as a junior,” Greta said. “I made it as one of four alto singers, the first to make it from Parkway Central in a while.”

At school, Greta’s teachers praise her not only for her voice, but also her work ethic and attitude toward any situation.

“A lot of kids can sing well, but it takes Greta’s effort and care towards what she does that makes her a wonderful musician,” Parkway Central choir director Ben Silvermintz said.

In addition to performing with the All-State Choir, Greta’s next musical venture will be playing the lead role of Rosemary in Parkway Central’s production of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” which runs Feb. 21 through 24.
