One of the most talked about rappers these days, Drake, has recently decided to connect with his Jewish roots and produce music with more of a klezmer sound. Some of the new hits on his upcoming album will draw inspiration from famous Jewish songs and movies.

“I recently went to a Friday night service with my bubbe and mother,” said Drake, 27, who was born Aubrey Drake Graham. “It inspired me to take a look at my music. I decide that I could reach a whole new audience.”

Drake was born in Toronto to Sandi and Dennis Graham; Sandi is Jewish, Dennis is African-American and not Jewish. His parents got divorced when he was 5-years-old.

Drake was raised Jewish by his mother, and attended a Jewish day school and had a bar mitzvah. But he fell out of touch with his Judaism a bit when his career started to take off. He did not have much time to go to synagogue and celebrate holidays with his family. But after finishing his most recent tour, he had some free time on his hands.

After going to temple, he went home and watched “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Yentl” with his bubbe and mother. During the movies, his mother noticed that Drake was thoroughly enjoying the klezmer music.

“I would look over at him and see him beaming with joy when songs such as ‘Matchmaker’ and ‘If I Were a Rich Man’ came on. He was singing along and after the movie he told me he wanted to incorporate similar styles into his own music,” Sandi Graham said.

The day after viewing the two movies, Drake immediately went into the studio to record a new album titled “Back to my Roots; L’chaim!” which will hit iTunes in early October. Drake flew his grandfather from Israel to the Hollywood studio to help him write his lyrics. His grandfather gave Drake some Yiddish words he could incorporate to his songs. Together, the pair wrote 15 songs for the new album.

“I’m very excited for this new album to drop, and I think it will jump to the top of charts,” said Drake.

“I really put my heart and soul into this album and it truly reflects who I am. Not many rappers these days will go back to their roots and show where they came from, but that’s what makes me special.”
