Annie’s Angle: Let’s kvetch

ANNIE COHEN, LADUE HORTON WATKINS HIGH SCHOOL, JUNIOR

May. The flowers are blooming, the sun is (mostly) shining, and summer, glorious summer, is just around the corner. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Before we can enjoy any of this, we need to spend hours indoors, hunched over textbooks, scribbling notes, and listening to teachers drone on about thrilling topics like dimensional analysis, synthetic division, and the importance of the bureaucracy in our government. So can you blame me if all I can do is kvetch?

I absolutely need to write my final paper for English class. But before that, I have to study for my chemistry final. After all, it’s a huge part of my grade. But wait, first I should really think about preparing for my many AP tests that are looming. Not to mention looking over my ACT review guides.

Right now my life revolves around college. Looking at colleges, getting the grades I need for certain colleges, and soon, applying for colleges! Kvetch, kvetch.

Shoot, I forgot that on top of everything else, I’m taking a test on Supreme Court cases Monday. That shouldn’t be too bad, right? All I have to do is memorize the general facts, constitutional issues, and judicial ruling on every landmark court case of the past two centuries.

Kvetch, kvetch.

Everything’s just moving so fast now! I dared to miss one day of school because I was sick, so why does it seem like I’m spending a week making up all the work I missed? A quiz here, a lab there, discussions everywhere.

Kvetch, kvetch.

Yep, it’s that time of the year. We’re cramming, we’re rushing, we’re screaming, we’re crying. And in a month, it will all be over. We’ll be tanning, swimming, laughing, smiling.

But for now, all we can do is kvetch.
