Synagogue Council of America

LOOKING BACK • President Jimmy Carter, the recipient of the first international Human Rights Award of the Synagogue Council of America, received a Yemenite shofar, the traditional ram’s horn, as a symbol of his “pursuit of freedom” for all people.  Making the presentation to President Carter were Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld (left), president of the Synagogue Council of America in 1979, and Rabbi Bernard Mandelbaum (center), executive vice-president of the Synagogue Council of America.  About 50 lay leaders and rabbis of the Synagogue Council of America attended the presentation in the Rose Garden of the White House.
