Yom Limmud teen event to feature talk for parents by ‘Youthologist’
Published October 26, 2011
This year’s Yom Limmud teen learning event has something new in store – for parents. While teens are participating in their choice of 11 workshops, parents will hear from Vanessa Van Petten, one of the nation’s youngest experts or “youthologists” on parenting and teens. Van Petten has become known for offering parenting advice from a teen’s perspective.
More than 200 teens are expected to attend Yom Limmud, which takes place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 at Congregation Shaare Emeth.
Parents will hear Van Petten discuss, “Text Me When Dinner’s Over: Learn How to Communicate & Decode Your Teen.”
Van Petten, 25, wrote her first parenting book from a teen’s perspective, “You’re Grounded,” when she was just 17. After winning the Mom’s Choice Award in 2009, she launched her popular parenting website, RadicalParenting.com, which she now writes with 60 teens, ages 12 to 20, answering questions from parents on everything from communication issues to cyber-bullying. She is also a columnist for CNN.
Her latest parenting book, “Do I Get My Allowance Before or After I’m Grounded?” translates what parents want to say into what teens want to hear. The book will be available for purchase after the parent event.
Yom Limmud is sponsored by the Central Agency for Jewish Education, local BBYO, JSU, NCSY, NFTY and USY chapters, and the St. Louis Jewish Educators and Youth Professionals Councils.
