The Washington University Student Union Senate has decided to table, until further notice, a resolution that was in consideration calling for the university to divest from the Boeing Company. The student governing body said on their Instagram story that the resolution was no longer on the March 5 agenda.
Drafted on Jan. 29, the resolution cited several international organizations that categorized Israeli policies as apartheid. It called out Boeing for supplying arms to Israel, pointing to 29,000 Palestinian deaths as among the reasons behind the need for the resolution.

“I alerted the community to this proposal and activated our Israel Fellow, Eden Yair, to this issue,” said Rabbi Hershey Novack, co-director of Chabad at WashU. “At that point, our student leaders began working with friends and allies to educate their elected senators and work to address this issue in a multidimensional way.”
Jewish student leaders across campus drafted a petition against the BDS Resolution, bringing attention to its pitfalls and antisemitic undertones. Nearly 1,000 people signed the petition.
“Although these types of votes are largely symbolic and don’t directly influence the university’s policies, we want to ensure the campus remains safe and inclusive for everyone, including the countless pro-Israel students, both Jewish and from numerous other backgrounds,” said Novack.
When word reached Jewish student leader and Wash U sophomore Tim Mellman that the resolution had been tabled, he said he felt pride.
“Pride in the leaders in the Jewish community — student leaders in coordination with Hillel, Chabad and advisors from Hillel International and ICC. They acted with incredible speed since we were informed of the resolution at noon on Friday,” said Mellman. “It was incredibly gratifying to see the strong support we have from the Wash U community as responses to our petition flooded in.”
The Jewish Advisory Council, representing Wash U’s Jewish and pro-Israel groups, is planning a Tisch event, scheduled for March 5, which aims to unite students in solidarity and remembrance, commemorating lives lost while fostering peace and inclusivity.
The Jewish Light reached out to the Wash U Student Union for comment via their Instagram account, but as of yet has not heard back.
