Used book sale set to run Aug. 10-17

The 42nd annual Used Book Sale will open on Sunday, Aug. 10 and will run through Sunday, Aug. 17 in the Ida Pasterak Auditorium and in Steve’s room at the Jewish Community Center’s Carlyn H. Wohl Building in Creve Coeur. Shoppers will be able to browse and buy in air conditioned comfort.

About 100,000 books, both hard and soft cover, will be available, organized into more than 50 categories including fiction, biography, children’s, collectibles, science fiction, mystery, foreign language, classics, politics, history, law, business, science, travel, humor, art, music, poetry and drama. There will also be a selection of records, CDs, tapes and videos.

Sunday, Aug. 10 is Preview Day for which there is a $10 admission charge. Tickets will go on sale that morning at 8:30 a.m. Admission is free on all other days of the sale. Friday, Aug. 15 is half-price book day.

The final day of the sale, Sunday, August 17, is bag day. Admission is free and shoppers can fill plastic bags, which we will provide, for $5 per bag. Sale hours are as follows: Opening Day, Sunday, Aug. 10: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Monday through Thursday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Friday: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; Saturday, August 16 the sale is closed; bag day, Sunday, Aug. 17: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Proceeds from the Used Book Sale benefit the JCC’s Roswell and Wilma Messing Cultural Arts and Education Department’s scholarship and programming needs.

Unless otherwise marked, most hardback books are priced at $2.

Paperbacks are priced at $1.

Used Book Sale Committee Chairman Harriet Barenfeld promises that this year’s sale will be one of the biggest and best, due in large part to the year-round work of volunteers who sort, clean, price, box and sell the books.
