The Jewish Community Center (The J) held its annual meeting on May 28, highlighting a year of growth, service and commitment to community. The evening featured the presentation of five awards recognizing exceptional individuals, and the announcement of a major philanthropic milestone: the renaming of the J’s Legacy Circle to the Staenberg Legacy Circle, in honor of philanthropist and developer Michael Staenberg.
The Staenberg Legacy Circle honors individuals who include the J in their estate or long-term financial plans. Staenberg’s support, including his own planned legacy gift, has helped shape the J into a thriving and inclusive center of Jewish life in St. Louis, said Todd Siwak, board chair of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, who announced the name change at the meeting.
“In recognition of Michael’s profound influence and unwavering dedication, we are honored to name the Staenberg Legacy Circle after him,” said the J’s President and CEO Steven Rosenzweig. “Michael’s commitment has inspired many to follow his lead in planting seeds for a brighter future.”
Staenberg was presented with a framed piece featuring the new logo and a quote from the Talmud: “As my ancestors planted for me, so too I plant for my children and my children’s children.”
The evening also included the presentation of the following community awards:
- Raquel Leverson received the J Associates Emerging Leader Award for her active volunteer leadership with Nishmah, Congregation B’nai Amoona, and monthly Rosh Chodesh circles. She brings intention and compassion to her work as a counselor, yoga instructor and community organizer.
- Joey Mufson was awarded the I.E. Millstone Community Service Award for his contributions to youth sports and mentorship through the Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School boys’ basketball program and Maccabi Select program, supporting youth development both on and off the court.
- Roger Scherck received the Mark C. Kodner Inspiration Award for his continued service as a mentor and educator, including work with CharacterPlus, Sherwood Forest Camp and The J. His commitment remains strong even while navigating personal health challenges.
- Todd Witzman, Facilities Manager at Camp Sabra, was recognized with the Lynn Wittels Professional Leadership Award for his behind-the-scenes work ensuring the success and safety of the camp experience. His steady leadership has helped guide the camp through many seasons.
- Tracey Singer accepted the Richard S. Weiss Presidents’ Award for her long-standing volunteer service across numerous J programs and events, including Shalom Baby, J Associates and Women’s Night, contributing to the J’s welcoming and connected community.
