Temple Israel event to honor Rev. Earl E. Nance, Jr.

Viola Harvey Nance, wife of Rev. Earl E. Nance, Jr., will accept an interfaith award honoring her husband given by Temple Israel Friday, Jan 13. Unfortunately, Rev. Nance, pastor of Greater Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, is continuing to recuperate from a heart attack he suffered on Dec. 18.

Nance had been scheduled to appear to accept the congregation’s Malachi Award for Interfaith Relations and Understanding during an interfaith worship service and celebration honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 7:30 p.m.

In addition to Viola Nance accepting the award, the Rev. Starsky D. Wilson, president and chief executive officer of Deaconess Foundation and senior minister of Saint John’s United Church of Christ in St. Louis, will deliver the Malachi keynote address. Prior to joining Saint John’s, Wilson served as Youth Minister at Greater Mt. Carmel. The Praise Connection Choir from Greater Mt. Carmel will perform at the event, which is open to the community. Temple Israel is located at corner of Ladue and Spoede Roads in Creve Coeur.

Wilson is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana and earned his Master of Divinity degree from Eden Theological Seminary. His preaching has been recognized by The Beatitudes Society Conference on Prophetic Preaching at the National Cathedral College of Preachers. He is a guest lecturer in congregational leadership at Eden Seminary.

Like Nance, Wilson is a prominent leader in the St. Louis interfaith community. He currently serves as vice president of Interfaith Partnership/Faith Beyond Walls and president of the Congress of Christian Education for the St. Louis Progressive Baptist Direct, among a variety of leadership roles in the community.
