St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame plans Nov. 6 induction event

The Jewish Community Center will induct the St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2018 during an event at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the Staenberg Family Complex in Creve Coeur. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival’s Sports Night, and each reservation includes a ticket to the Book Festival program at 7 p.m.

There are now 83 members of the St. Louis Jewish Hall of Fame, which was started in 1992. The Hall of Fame is located in the Staenberg Family Complex Health & Wellness Building in Creve Coeur and is managed by the J. 

This year’s inductees are: 

• Samuel Broh, soccer

• Nikki Caplan, of blessed memory, ballooning

• Morton Gelber, baseball and football

• Silas Goldman, handball

• Bob Hardcastle, baseball

• Myron Holtzman, author and sports journalism

• Marc Schreiber, sportsmanship

• Stacey Smith, ice dancing

• Aaron Vickar, ice hockey

• Jerry Zuckerman, racquetball

In addition to honoring inductees, the ceremony will recognize and award scholarships to four high school scholar athletes from the St. Louis area who have made significant contributions or accomplishments in athletics, academics, leadership skills and community service.

The 2018 High School Scholar Athletes being recognized are:

• Ariel Berwald, cross country, track, swimming and triathlon

• Talia Emch, basketball, soccer, softball 

• Blake Seigel, baseball, basketball, soccer

• Michael Siler, swimming and water polo

The St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame was made possible by the family of Isadore Beilenson, an athlete and community leader. The Hall of Fame was dedicated to his memory on July 12, 1992. Past inductions were held in 1992, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2010 and 2014.
