The Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community will commemorate Veterans Day with a special edition of its monthly Shabbat Learning program, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16. The program, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Beit Midrash of The J’s Arts and Education Building in Creve Coeur.
The event’s guest speaker will be retired U.S. Army Col. Dr. Monroe M. Ginsburg, a career military dental officer and former president of the Jewish Veterans Memorial Center of St. Louis. Ginsburg will discuss the history and contributions of Jewish service members in the U.S. armed forces, tracing Jewish participation in American defense back to its early colonial roots.
“American Jews have served in the defense of our lands since the beginnings of Jewish life in America in 1654, when Asher Levy won the right to stand guard in New Amsterdam,” said Ginsburg, His presentation will highlight the stories of Jewish individuals who have answered the call to serve across generations.
Beyond his military career, Ginsburg has held leadership roles in the Jewish War Veterans (JWV) organization, previously serving as the Midwest commander for the JWV Department across Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska. He has also been a commander of St. Louis JWV Post 644.
Ginsburg is an active member of Kol Rinah Congregation and the St. Charles Jewish community.
