Shavuot weekend at Bais Abraham features scholars-in-residence Michael and Mona Fishbane

Bais Abraham Congregation welcomes scholars Michael and Mona Fishbane for a Shavuot-Memorial Day weekend of learning for the community, from Saturday, May 23 to Monday, May 25.
Michael Fishbane is author of numerous books on the bible and Jewish thought, and serves as the Nathan Cummings Distinguished Service Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Chicago. Mona Fishbane is a clinical psychologist in private practice, and director of couple therapy training at the Chicago Center for Family Health. She has a particular interest in integrating values from the Jewish tradition with emerging wisdom from neuroscience and relationship science.
The Shavuot weekend will include:
• A free Lunch and Learn with Mona Fishbane on Saturday, May 23 following Shabbat morning services. She will speak on the topic “Intergenerational Legacies: Challenges of the Fifth Commandment.” All are welcome and RSVPs are not required. Michael Fishbane will give a sermon during Shabbat morning services.
• Dinner and Tikkun Layl Shavuot Communitywide Learning on Saturday, with dinner at 9 p.m., niggunim at 10, Fishbane talk at 10:30 and breakout learning sessions at 11:30 p.m. featuring Rabbi Noah Arnow, Ela Bokobza, Rabbi Randy Fleisher, Rabbi Jim Goodman, Rabbi Tracy Nathan, Maharat Rori Picker Neiss, Rabbi Hyim Shafner, Rabbi Lane Steinger and Rabbi Susan Talve. With Michael and Mona Fishbane. Dinner is $10 per person and RSVP is required. There is no charge for the Tikkun Layl Shavuot Communitywide Learning. • Wine and Cheese and Ice Cream Party at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 24. The event will include fun for the whole family, commemorating the tradition of eating dairy foods on Shavuot in style. • Free Lunch and Learn with Michael Fishbane on Monday, May 25 following morning services. He will discuss “The Midrashic Imagination and the Events at Sinai.” The event is open to the community and RSVPs are not required.
