Shaare Emeth welcomes Rabbi Andrea Weiss as scholar-in-residence

Rabbi Andrea Weiss will be Congregation Shaare Emeth’s next Deutsch Scholar-in-Residence from Friday, Feb. 9 through Sunday, Feb. 11.
Weiss is associate professor of Bible at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York and was recently appointed as the incoming Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Provost. She served as campaign coordinator for “American Values Religious Voices: 100 Days. 100 Letters” and as associate editor of “The Torah: A Women’s Commentary.”
During the scholar-in-residence weekend, she will lead a number of educational and justice-oriented events. All events are free and open to the public:
Friday, Feb. 9: 6 p.m. Tzedek Shabbat
Weiss will discuss “Standing Idly by is Not an Option: Creating ‘American Values, Religious Voices,’ ” looking at how the 2016 election led to the creation of a campaign that sent 100 letters from religious scholars to elected officials in Washington for the first 100 days of the Trump administration.
Saturday, Feb: 10:
• 9 a.m. Torah Study
“Ten Years Later: Why a Women’s Torah Commentary Still Matters,” will look at how the laws contained in the Torah portion, Mishpatim, address a range of criminal and civil matters, many of which remain relevant today. The parsha will be studied through the lens of “The Torah: A Women’s Commentary,” marking the 10th anniversary of the publication.
• 7:30 p.m. Beit Tzedek Café: A Social Justice Poetry Slam Coffeehouse
Enjoy an evening of poetry and song as Weiss, along with local poets and musicians, helps explore the power of words and song to bring about justice. Coffees, teas, wine and desserts provided.
Sunday, Feb: 11: At 10 a.m. Weiss discusses “For You Were Strangers in the Land of Egypt: Biblical Values and American Voices,” examining in-depth how scholars from different faiths drew upon the biblical teaching that Jews’ experience in Egypt should shape how the way to treat the vulnerable.
