Pizmon returns to Shaare Zedek for weekend of events

Shaare Zedek Synagogue welcomes back Pizmon, a Jewish a cappella singing group from Columbia University, Barnard College and the Jewish Theological Seminary. This group of talented college students will celebrate a weekend of music and learning to kick off the second year of Shaare Zedek’s “Ruach Am’cha” Music Initiative.

Shaare Zedek’s “Ruach Am’cha” Music Initiative, led by Hazzan Joanna Dulkin, is among only a few grantee synagogues in the country chosen by the Legacy Heritage Foundation, to pilot programming which incorporates music into all aspects of synagogue life.

The musical weekend begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, for Shaare Zedek’s Friday evening service, Shabbat Rinah and a mini-concert celebrating the consecration of our Shaare Shalom Religious School students. Following the service, at 7:15 p.m., a Shabbat dinner will feature singing and spirit led by Pizmon. Dinner reservations are required by Oct. 27 and costs $18 for adults ($15 for Shaare Zedek members) and $12 for children 12 and under ($10 for members).

At 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 Pizmon will lead a “Lunch and Sing” session at Shaare Zedek following Shabbat morning services.

Staam, Washington University’s Jewish a cappella group will join Pizmon at 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening for Havdalah and a special concert. This evening of collegiate a cappella singing is sponsored by both St. Louis Hillel and Shaare Zedek Synagogue. A $5 donation is suggested for this event.
