The word for snow in Hebrew is שֶׁלֶג (pronounced shaeleg), but it doesn’t come in very handy in Israel, where the white stuff is rare.
That’s why the first St. Louis snowfall of 2025 on Sunday, Jan. 5, was a highlight for Ziv Shalev, who hails from Yehud, a town near Ben Gurion Airport.
Shalev, 19, one of the four shinshinim who arrived here for in September for a year of service. Shalev is assigned to work at Congregation Shaare Emeth and Temple Emanuel.
He has never experienced American snow—until now. His sister Noam is visiting so the siblings got the true St. Louis snow experience, with a slide down Art Hill. “It was super fun!” Shalev said. “One of the best experiences I’ve had this year of the shlichut.”
