Temple Israel hosts Professor Paul Liptz as Scholar-in-Residence from Jan. 25 – Jan. 27. On Friday, Jan. 25, Liptz will speak on “Israel: A Light Unto the Nations or Just One of Many Others?” at Shabbat evening services at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Jan. 26, he will speak on “From Victims to Victors: The Powerful New Jews” at 9:45 a.m. before Shabbat services. He will speak on “Lessons and Legacies: Israel’s War of Independence” at 1:30 p.m. following a 12:30 p.m. luncheon (reservations required for the luncheon only).

Holocaust Museum holds screening of ‘Rosenstrasse’

The Holocaust Museum and Learning Center’s free monthly film series will begin in 2008 with Rosenstrasse on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. in the HMLC Theater, in the Jewish Federation Kopolow Building.

The film, based on the “Rosentrasse protest” of 1943, recounts how hundreds of “Aryan” German women dared to protest the arrest of their Jewish husbands. Rosenstrasse, directed by Margarethe Von Trotta, will be presented in German with English subtitles. This program will also mark the International Day of Commemoration of Victims of the Holocaust, mandated by the United Nations.

Introductory remarks and a post-screening discussion will be presented by Warren Rosenblum, assistant professor in the History Department, Webster University.

NJT presents ‘Cherry Docs’

Canadian playwright David Gow’s Cherry Docs will play at NJT’s Wolfson Studio Theatre at the JCC’s Millstone Campus in Creve Coeur from through Feb. 10 with performances Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

In this explosive play, Gow provides a provocative exploration of the nature of hate as it follows an unrepentant skinhead on trial for murder, and his Jewish legal-aid defense lawyer who prides himself on his liberal tolerance.

NJT will host numerous post performance “Talk Backs” to allow audience members to process and discuss what they have seen and how it fits into current societal trends today. The discussions are being presented in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League.

JPROSTL set to hold award luncheon

JPROSTL, the Organization for Professionals Working in the Jewish Community will hold “WOW — You Make Us Proud!,” a luncheon celebrating the work of Jewish communal professionals on Tuesday, Jan. 29 from noon-1:30 p.m. at the Federation Kopolow Building.

Special Guest Speaker will be Fred Firestone, a national columnist, attorney, trainer and entrepreneur.

Fred will be speaking about “Delivering the WOWED Factor.” Recipients of the 2007 JPROSTL Awards will also be honored.
