When it comes to breast cancer awareness, the focus often stays on early detection and treatment. The Hamsa Wellness Community at the Jewish Community Center is widening that lens, inviting St. Louis to explore breast cancer prevention St. Louis, whole-person wellness and support through its annual Beyond Pink event.

Classes that meet you where you are
At its core, Beyond Pink is about taking charge of one’s health. Participants can start the day with specialty fitness classes, from restorative stretching to high-energy dance. Offerings include Restorative and Roll, Tai Chi, Yoga for Cancer, Strength Over Cancer and a lively Zumba-thon.
A resource fair that goes beyond awareness
The event is not just about exercise. A resource fair will feature community partners sharing information on hereditary cancer risks, genetic testing and counseling, rehabilitation and financial support services, and healthy lifestyle choices. Guests can enjoy complimentary chair massages and healthy snacks while meeting others who share a commitment to wellness.
Why BRCA education matters
Education is central to the mission of the Hamsa Wellness Community, which provides support and resources for those navigating cancer risk, with a particular focus on individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. Research shows that one in 40 Ashkenazi Jewish men and women carries a BRCA gene mutation, a rate nearly 10 times higher than the general population. Women who carry the mutation face up to an 80% risk of developing breast cancer and a 44% risk of ovarian cancer, while men who carry the mutation also face increased risks and can pass it on to their children. Through Beyond Pink, organizers aim to make this information more accessible and less intimidating by pairing education with community connection and self-care.
The event is free and open to all, with pre-registration encouraged but walk-ins welcome. Participants can find the full schedule, register or purchase a commemorative T-shirt at jccstl.com/beyondpink.
