Monthly Israeli film series starts March 21

Bais Abraham, JGrads, Next Dor, the Jewish Community Center and the Israeli American Council are partnering for a monthly Israeli film series, starting at Saturday, March 21.

The monthly films and discussion include Israeli refreshments. Events planned include:

Saturday, March 21: 8:30 p.m. screening of “Children of the Sun,” which examines the first generation of kibbutz children who were separated from their parents and raised according to the principles of communal child rearing and education. Leading discussion will be St. Louis residents who grew up on Kibbutzim: Ron Golan, Shifra Galer and Rachelli Zachary.

• Saturday, April 25: 9 p.m. screening of “The Name My Mother Gave Me,” a film about growth and self-discovery, following Israelis at a leadership training program whose year culminates in a journey to their native land, Ethiopia, to confront their roots. Ataklit Tesfaye, an Israeli shaliach who made aliyah from Ethiopia in 2008, will discuss her story via Skype.

• Thursday, May 21: 8 p.m. screening of “Yes, Miss Commander!” For 100 days a film crew recorded emotion-packed scenes of a special Israeli Defense Force unit. This unit, made up of male soldiers who come from backgrounds of violence, abuse and drugs, is led by female commanders. The discussion will feature Raz Revah, an Israeli shlicha who served in the unit.

Each movie is free and shown at Bais Abraham Congregation, 6910 Delmar Boulevard in University City.
