The 4th Annual Dr. Herman T. Blumenthal Memorial Concert will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27 at Brith Sholom Kneseth Israel, 1107 Linden Avenue in Richmond Heights. Admission is $10 at the door and benefits BSKI’s Social Action Committee.
Pianist Fred Blumenthal, piano, and guest artists Linda Blumenthal, Madeline Kaufman, Rabbi Mordecai Miller, Stanley Topfer and the Meshorerim Quartet will perform.
Dr. H.T. Blumenthal (1913-2006) was a pathologist with interests in public health and diseases of aging. A resident of St. Louis in the 1930s and 40s and from 1947 until his death, he was remembered at his funeral as a research scientist, family man and social activist. Drawing on instructions in funeral prayers to perform acts of charity in memory of the deceased, his son Fred, choir director at BSKI, began the Annual Dr. Herman T. Blumenthal Memorial Concerts a year later as fund-raisers for the Social Action Committee at BSKI.
This year’s concert features music by Jacob (“Jacques”) Blumenthal (1829 -1908), a German-born and French-educated composer who was pianist to Queen Victoria of England. Other repertoire includes Jewish music – clarinet solos, vocal solos and quartets, including original compositions by Fred Blumenthal.
