LouFest cancellation means free Eckert’s apples for Rosh Hashanah

For Jewish LouFest fans who are upset about the cancellation of the musical festival, there may be at least one positive to come out of the bad news: You might not have to spend as much money on Rosh Hashanah.

Eckert’s Country Store and Farms will be giving away 100,000 free apples this weekend, the orchard operator announced on Facebook Thursday morning.

Eckert’s had been slated to sell the fruit at the music festival in Forest Park. Organizers announced Wednesday that the annual event had been cancelled because of financial hurdles, the loss of sponsors and contract issues with artists, among other reasons.

Jews traditionally eat apples and honey on Rosh Hashanah to express hope for a sweet new year.

So don’t just sit there wallowing under a tree about the lack of Robert Plant and Modest Mouse in St. Louis this weekend. (Otherwise an apple may hit you in the head.)

Eckert’s will offer apples from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Carondelet Park Rec Complex and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City Museum.
