HMLC screens St. Louis premier of ‘The Port of Last Resort’
The first film in the 2016 Sandra and Mendel Rosenberg Sunday Afternoon Film Series will be “The Port of Last Resort,” screening at 1 p.m. Jan. 31 in the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center’s theatre at the Jewish Federation building, 12 Millstone Campus Drive. This award-winning documentary focuses on the story of nearly 20,000 European Jewish refugees who fled to Shanghai from 1938 to 1941. Shanghai, a free port that did not require papers for entry, became the “last resort” for many Jews seeking a safe haven from the Nazis. This film, produced in 1999 with a running time of 80 minutes, was scheduled to complement the HMLC’s current exhibit, “An Odd and Improbable Tale: Jewish Refugees in Shanghai.”
Introductory remarks and a post-screening discussion will be facilitated by the film’s writer and director, Joan Grossman. Films in the Sunday series are free and open to the public, although RSVPs are requested. For more information, call 314-442-3711 or email [email protected].
Jewish Light seeks applicants for journalism internship

The Jewish Light internship is for high school or college students with coursework or experience in journalism or writing. The paid reporting internship will offer students an opportunity to gain experience in a professional newspaper environment. The internship lasts eight weeks and start and end dates are flexible, depending on the candidate’s schedule.
