JOLT offers community service opportunities for teens

Jewish Opportunities & Learning for Teens will offer two opportunities for teens to register for classes and take part in community service. JOLT, now beginning its fifth year, offers interactive learning and socializing for eighth to 12th graders from various congregations on Thursday nights. This year, JOLT will stress the value of community service by providing periodic events for teens to help others.

From 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, teens can register for JOLT in the Jewish Federation Kopolow Building lobby, and then head to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry to stuff bags of groceries for families in need. In the JOLT tradition of snacking in the midst of activity, an ice cream truck will be on-site for free treats.

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Congregation B’nai Amoona, teens can register for JOLT classes and then head to one of five service stations set up in the auditorium.  Meaningful mitzvah projects to choose from are:  making lunch bags for residents of an emergency shelter for women and their families; creating Rosh Hashanah cards for American Jewish soldiers; making Huggie blankets for Ronald McDonald House; assembling chew toys for an animal shelter; assembling Shabbat candles and havdalah bags for Tomchei Shabbos. Community service credit will be given to attendees of either or both events.
