JCC plans youth theater programs

This fall children and teens in the Jewish Community Center’s Youth Theatre program will have the opportunity to play and learn the craft of acting in a creative environment. Programs include:
• Children in grades K-2 will perform a musical called “Colors: We’re Better Together.” No audition is required for this program. Rehearsal dates are Sept. 22-Nov. 17 at the JCC Fox Building in Chesterfield. Performance dates are Nov. 21 and 24 at the JCC Staenberg Building in Creve Coeur. The cost is $150 for JCC members and $175 for non-members.
• Grades 3-5 will perform “Capture the Moon,” which follows villagers searching for light and have the idea to capture the light of the moon. Along the journey they find people who are a little different from them in this funny play that is filled with simple wisdom, showing how everyone is unique. In addition, the cast will perform the short play,
“Elijah’s Violin,” based on a Jewish fairytale. Auditions are 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 25. Rehearsals will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 22-Dec. 15 at the JCC Fox Building in Chesterfield. Performances are Dec. 19 and 22 at the JCC Staenberg Building in Creve Coeur. The cost is $235 for J members and $265 for non-members.
• Grades 6-10 will perform the classic Shakespeare play “Romeo and Juliet.” Auditions are 1 – 5 p.m. on Aug. 25 at the JCC Fox Building. Rehearsals are Sept. 8-Dec 4 divided between the Fox and Staenberg buildings; performances take place Dec. 5 and 8 at the JCC Staenberg Building in Creve Coeur. The cost is $235 for J Member and $265 for non-members.
A special audition workshop for grades 3-9 will be held from 2-4 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Fox Building in Chesterfield. The workshop is designed to help children learn techniques to replace nerves with confidence and making the audition process fun. The cost is $25 (those participating will save $10 on their registration fee). All children who audition for the programs are cast and no previous experience in needed.
