Israeli journalist joins Can We Talk? on Gaza media coverage

Do you have opinions about how the media handle the Israel-Gaza conflict?

You’re not alone.

Questions abound regarding coverage during these tense times:

• Is the news being provided accurate?

• How do we know when an outlet is biased or unfair?

• How does real-time reporting affect coverage?

• Do reporters have the necessary context to fairly and competently inform readers and viewers?

“We’re so often asked about how prominent news outlets choose their coverage, angles and focus on stories about the conflict,” said Jewish Light Publisher/CEO Larry Levin. “This forum gives us an opportunity to talk about the topic in a meaningful and substantive way.”

Join the Light and its partners, the Jewish Community Center and Jewish Community Relations Council,  on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 7 pm, as we discuss these and many more related topics at our next Can We Talk? event, Views on the News: Analyzing the Media in the Israel-Gaza Conflict.

The event will take place at the Performing Arts Center at the JCC’s Arts & Education Building in Creve Coeur.

On video from Israel will be Haviv Gur, political analyst of the Times of Israel (timesofisrael.com).

Gur is a veteran Israeli-American journalist who has lectured on Israeli politics, Israel-Diaspora and Israel-U.S. relations, and the politics and conflicts of the Middle East for over a decade.

Gur was director of communications for the Jewish Agency for Israel, and has visited and written about Jewish communities in over 20 countries.

The online Times of Israel joined the Israeli media scene several years ago under the leadership of former Jerusalem Post Editor David Horovitz. The news outlet has been live blogging every day since the conflict began, with news reports sometimes occurring on a minute-by-minute basis.

Joining Gur on the program will be Adam Goodman, Deputy Managing Editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He oversees the newspaper’s regional, financial and Washington coverage for print and online. Goodman has worked at the Post-Dispatch since 1987 in a variety of roles, including business reporter, environmental reporter, science editor, assistant business editor, metro editor and assistant managing editor.

Also taking part are Levin and Jewish Community Relations Council Executive Director Batya Abramson-Goldstein.

The evening will include a moderated discussion of the issues surrounding media coverage of the conflict, followed by questions from the audience.

RSVPs are recommended by contacting Diane Maier at the JCC at 314-442-3190 or [email protected], or online at stljewishlight.com/canwetalk.
