After weeks of worry about how the government shutdown and SNAP lapse would impact local families, the St. Louis community showed up — in a big way.
On Saturday, Nov. 8, the St. Louis Area Foodbank, The Staenberg Group, First Alert 4 and The District STL teamed up for an urgent community food drive that collected more than 23,000 pounds of food and personal care items.
Cars lined up through The District’s east parking lot, where volunteers unloaded donations and packed Foodbank trucks headed for pantries across the region. The most-needed items included baby formula, peanut butter, canned meats, cereal and hygiene products, all helping families affected by lost benefits and missed paychecks.
As one volunteer said while loading another box into a waiting truck, “This is what St. Louis does best — we take care of each other.”
