“Hell Before Their Very Eyes: American Soldiers Liberate Concentration Camps in Germany, April 1945” is the focus of a presentation and book signing with author John C. McManus, at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 6 at the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center, 12 Millstone Campus Drive.
McManus, a military historian, will discuss his book, “Hell Before Their Very Eyes,” which focuses on the experiences of the soldiers who liberated Ohrdruf, Buchenwald and Dachau, and their determination to bear witness to this horrific history. Drawing on a rich blend of archival sources and thousands of firsthand accounts, this powerful book offers an unflinching look at the horrors American soldiers uncovered in Nazi concentration camps.
McManus is Curators’ Professor of U.S. Military History at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo.
This program is supported by the Rubin (of blessed memory) and Gloria Feldman Family Education Institute of the HMLC and the Saul Brodsky Jewish Community Library. Additional support provided from the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival and the National Archives.
