Every so often, a photo from the Jewish Light archives reminds us why preserving local Jewish history matters. This one, taken at Brith Sholom Kneseth Israel (BSKI), shows a group gathered reverently around a Torah scroll. At the far left is Rabbi Benson Skoff, BSKI’s longtime spiritual leader. But it’s the four women alongside him — focused, joyful and deeply engaged — who remain unknown.
We’re turning to our readers to help uncover their stories.
Do you recognize these women?
Based on their dress and hairstyles, this image likely dates to the late 1970s or early 1980s. The photo was taken in the sanctuary at BSKI’s former building on Linden Avenue in Richmond Heights. Were these women preparing for a bat mitzvah? Taking part in an adult education program? Honored during a special service?
We want to know — and we’re hoping you do too.
Preserving our past, one name at a time
Helping us identify these women is about more than filling in a caption. It’s about preserving the legacy of the St. Louis Jewish Light and our community — reclaiming the history and honoring the people who helped shape it.
If you see someone you know, recognize a detail, or want to share a story about BSKI or Rabbi Skoff, send us an email at [email protected] or message us on social.
Your memories help us preserve more than photos — they help us preserve identity.
