Hate crimes series, website earn ‘Light’ national awards

The St. Louis Jewish Light earned three Simon Rockower Awards for “Excellence in Jewish Journalism” from the American Jewish Press Association (AJPA) on June 29. The awards, honoring the best Jewish journalism published in 2010, were presented by the AJPA at its annual conference, held this year in Dallas.
Leaders of Jewish newspapers and magazines from around the country attended. The awards were judged by an independent panel of journalists convened by the AJPA.

“We are especially proud of these awards because they underscore the Light’s commitment to providing our readers with excellent journalism and distinguish the hard work of a very dedicated and talented staff,” said Publisher/CEO Larry Levin.
The annual awards were given for Jewish journalism published during 2010.
The Light’s awards are:
• Editor Ellen Futterman and the Light were recognized with a first — place award for “Comprehensive Coverage or Investigative Journalism” for the Light’s special two-part report on hate crimes. “The State of Hate” was published in May and June of 2010, and consisted of two 8-page sections. The project was supported by a Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis enterprise reporting grant. The “State of Hate” special section may be viewed online at www.stljewishlight.com/hate.
• First Place, Oustanding Website: www.stljewishlight.com. The Jewish Light unveiled its new, totally revamped website in May 2010.
• Second Place, Execellence in Special Sections for the Light’s Fall Arts Guide, published Sept. 8.
